The Antarctic Fur Seal was very heavily hunted in the 18th and 19th centuries for its pelt by sealers from the US and UK. By the early twentieth century, the seal was regarded as commercially extinct, and perhaps completely extinct.
Today the population has recovered to estimates around 2-4 million. They are still a protected species, however, the UK is trying to overturn that due to the seals heavy impact on Antarctic plant species.
